Screw Halloween -- the short period that follows is actually one of my favorite times of the year. Christians call it "All Saint's Day" or "All Soul's Day," but in Mexico -- or in Los Angeles, where I spent several years of my life -- it's known as "El Dia de los Muertos," or "The Day of the Dead." Do me the favor of not pointing out the irony of my being vehemently anti-religion and yet willing to appreciate a holiday steeped in religious symbolism and iconography. I'm just weird like that. And there's simply no denying the eerie beauty of the Day of the Dead celebration.
In honor of El Dia de los Muertos, I suggest you eat a few candy skulls and listen to this: a playfully surrealist masterpiece that's often overlooked as one of the best songs of the 90s.
It's Los Lobos' Kiko and the Lavender Moon.
