West of Eden

Charlie: I've never felt like this before.

Josh: It doesn't go away.

-- The West Wing

I'm sure I'm not the only one who's noticed that, in between fulfilling its commitment to perpetuate every possible offensive gay stereotype through vapid reality programming, Bravo has recently started running old episodes of The West Wing.

Obviously, this was more a tactical decision than anything else: the network understands that there's once again an audience for a show which portrays public service in the executive branch as a noble, majestic endeavor and that it won't be regarded simply with a kind of sad nostalgia for what once was or what could've been.

I'm happy to say that I'm a member of that audience.

I used to watch The West Wing and wonder why our own American presidency couldn't be more like the fictional one penned by Aaron Sorkin -- hopeful and wise, full of integrity and virtue. And now, for the first time, I'm looking to the future with the firm belief that what's soon to inhabit the highest corridors of power in our nation won't simply be the stuff of Capra-esque fancy -- it will be better.

For the first time, possibly ever, I'm ready to put actual faith in our leaders.

And it feels good.
