"This much is now clear. Their clear and open intent is to do all they can, however they can, to sabotage the new administration (and the economy to boot). They want failure. Even now. Even after the last eight years. Even in a recession as steeply dangerous as this one. There are legitimate debates to be had; and then there is the cynicism and surrealism of total political war. We now should have even less doubt about what kind of people they are. And the mountain of partisan vitriol Obama will have to climb every day of the next four or eight years."
-- Andrew Sullivan responding to yesterday's premeditated publicity stunt in which Republican Judd Gregg snubbed President Obama by withdrawing as Obama's nominee for commerce secretary
In response, President Obama said this:
"It comes as something of a surprise, because the truth, you know, Mr. Gregg approached us with interest and seemed enthusiastic. But ultimately, I think, we're going to just keep on making efforts to build the kind of bipartisan consensus around important issues that I think the American people are looking for."
One guy is trying to unite the parties and the nation. The other side is playing juvenile games and trying to thwart him at every turn -- even at the expense of the country's economy and the country itself -- because it's that desperate to see him fail.
It couldn't be any simpler.
