Anybody who's ever done ecstasy knows that the right music is at least 50% of the experience. Back when my friends and I made a habit of turning the weekends into tribal gatherings at my Miami apartment (basically, the 90s) we had a nighttime playlist that was pretty much set in stone -- one carefully engineered to heighten each feeling and emotion as it occurred throughout the evening.
Vanessa Daou's Near the Black Forest was always track #6.
The album it's taken from, Zipless, is basically all about sex; it features lyrics inspired by the admittedly dumb writings of Erica Jong, whose nephew is Vanessa Daou's husband, Peter Daou (who himself is an infinitely more talented and insightful writer than his aunt).
Zipless is an occasionally silly affair, which only makes sense given how hard it tries to be provocative. But there are moments on it of sheer sensuous bliss -- the kind of thing you can just close your eyes and float away on.
This song fits that latter description perfectly.
