I used to joke that I worked with Rick Sanchez so often throughout my career in TV news that it would've taken a restraining order to get him to stay the hell away from me. We started off together at WSVN in Miami, where he was my 10pm anchor, then moved to MSNBC in the early 00s and eventually to CNN, where he's now made, shall we say, quite the name for himself.
Look, I'm one of the few people you'll come across who will just about always defend Rick. Sure he can behave like a pompous ass on-air, but he's actually a really good guy and his ultimate saving grace is that he never takes himself too seriously. In fact, I've grown to enjoy the idea that his antics at CNN often purposely highlight the hypocrisy of a network that grandiosely boasts about how it's the most trusted name in capital-J journalism while encouraging a guy like Sanchez to run wild. As far as Rick's concerned, he isn't doing journalism, and neither is CNN; they're both just doing TV. Oddly enough, I respect that.
Still, that doesn't mean he hasn't earned this little takedown by Jon Stewart and The Daily Show. The funny thing, though? You know Sanchez is loving every second of the attention.
