One of the reasons I never, until very recently, brought up race as a potential factor in the psychotic level of venom being directed at Barack Obama is simple: It's a damn hard thing to prove, and it's something you want to be sure of before you go making accusations.
Given what we've all witnessed in the past couple of weeks, though -- from shouting Southern congressman, to outraged conservative parents apoplectic over a simple presidential speech to their kids, to angry white people marching through DC, many carrying racially offensive posters -- the question of race simply can't be easily dismissed.
I'm not the only one who thinks this. Joan Walsh at Salon is pondering the same thing, and she's backing it up with an incontrovertible statistic: Obama is losing support among white voters.
