Thinking Outside the Inbox

Yet another entry in our ongoing series which brings just some of the PR-firm junk e-mail I regularly get to you, the readers.

"Hi Chez,

I wanted to get in touch about 3 Doors Down and Daughtry, who, as you might know, are co-headlining a 13 date summer tour starting on July 3rd. Both Daughtry and 3 Doors Down are active members of the 'askem' community, which is mobile platform that allows users to engage their social network by asking them questions they would like answered.

For example, 3 Doors Down recently asked: 'Chet's new guitar -- what do you think? #3DD #askem', which results in 72% answering 'This is badass' and 28% answering 'I really liked the old one'. Daughtry recently asked: 'Who is the real star?', which resulted in 49% answering 'Lil’ guy', 39% answering 'Tough choice' and 11% answering 'Big guy'.

Now Askem would like to ask you: which band are you excited to see this summer?

-- Daughtry?

-- 3 Doors Down?

-- Or both?

Please contact me if you’d like to learn more about 'askem', this survey, and if you’d like to speak with the CEO of 'askem', about the platform and their partnership with Daughtry and 3 Doors Down.

Best,

Alex"

And now, my response...

Dear Alex,

Thanks for taking the time to write as I so rarely get to the chance to talk to someone as smart as me. First off, might know about the upcoming Daughtry/3 Doors Down tour? Are you kidding? As a former 37-year-old gas station attendant in Ocala, Florida and a recent proud half-semester graduate of Apex Tech's prestigious school of refrigerator repair, I already have my tickets well in hand for their big show at the Gatorama amphitheater just off Route 27. Asking me to decide which band I'm more excited to see is like asking -- well, I just don't know! I guess that's why I need your product.

About that: So what you're saying is that I now never have to make a decision again because I can just ask the always trustworthy people of the internet what I should do in any given situation, do I have this right? And what's more, to avoid the uncomfortable situation that arises whenever I already do this on Twitter and get back one of those pesky 140-character essay answers (TL;DR!), I can just put it in the form of a multiple choice question, thereby truly dumbing the whole process down to the level of a retarded three-year-old who's just had an ice-pick lobotomy, right? Well, where do I sign up?

You have no idea how handy your product would've been a couple of months ago when I was trying to figure out whether to hit my girlfriend with an open-hand or a closed fist for accidentally throwing out my favorite Puddle of Mudd t-shirt. Or when I had to decide between 20x12 American Racing bolt-pattern rims for my truck or a new roll bar and custom decal for the back window memorializing my brothers Donnie and Randy who died last year in a rollover crash because they didn't have a roll bar. Or when I needed to decide whether to secretly go down on that guy behind the 7-11 last Tuesday night or let him go down on me.

Bottom line here, yeah, I'd love to talk to your CEO. At least I think. How about I get your product and let the public decide for me -- would that be possible? I'm so bad at this decision thing.

Before I go, because I see that Junior's started a fire out in the shed, I think I figured out the answer to that question you asked.

Which would I like most:

1. Seeing Daughtry

2. Seeing 3 Doors Down

3. Both

4. Falling into the pit at Gatorama before one note of "music" is played and being ripped apart by hungry alligators and crocodiles while a crowd looks on in horror.

I'd say #4. Sure, I added that fourth choice, but your product lets me do that -- right?

Toodles,

Chez

Yet another entry in our ongoing series which brings just some of the PR-firm junk e-mail I regularly get to you, the readers.

Hi Chez!

As fans anxiously await the season premiere of Glee on September 20th, those looking for even more mash-ups, more show-mance, and more Sue need only head to their local bookstores to get their hands on any of the three pitch-perfect original Glee novels currently available from Poppy/Little, Brown. Recognizing the show’s powerful and passionate fan base, each book in the Glee publishing program is created in close collaboration with the creators of Fox’s hit show, and reflects the series’ intelligent comedic sensibility and quirky, heartfelt story lines.

GLEE: THE BEGINNING

Want to know what was happening with Rachel, Kurt, Quinn and Finn before Will Schuster took over the Glee Club? Find out in the first Original Glee Novel, a prequel that transports readers to McKinley High's hallways before the show began.

GLEE: FOREIGN EXCHANGE

Can Rachel Berry rock a beret? McKinley High goes international when a French glee club comes to town in the second pitch-perfect original Glee novel!

GLEE: SUMMER BREAK

In this brand-new story officially approved by the creators of Glee, Mr. Schuester doesn't want the glee club to lose its momentum over summer break, so he's talked Rachel, Finn, and the crew into running a singing workshop for local kids.

Please let me know if you have any questions or if you need me to send copies of the books/additional information.

I'd be happy to send you books for a giveaway!

All best,

Lily

And now, my response:

Lily,

OMG! This must be my lucky day! You know, I was just sitting here thinking to myself that if only there had been a phenomenon like Glee bukkakeing the face of pop culture during my high school days, I probably wouldn't have grown into the bitter, elitist, middle-aged heterosexual asshole I am today. That's because Glee makes being a gay teenager look so, well, just so darn awesome that I likely would've tried to convert in the hope of eventually becoming a bitter, elitist, middle-aged homosexual asshole like Glee creator Ryan Murphy.

Alas, there were no shows like Glee during my formative years, and so a childhood spent feasting on The A-Team and Knight Rider meant that I was one of the unlucky, drab ones who didn't get to dance around his or her bedroom to whatever was the Katy Perry-esque underdog anthem of the era, proudly proclaiming how cool it was to be so liberatingly uncool.

Anyhoo, bottom line: No, not really interested in any Glee books, even for a free giveaway. In fact, I'm trying to figure out why the hell anyone would want to read a story that's usually set to music if you can't hear the music. Although if you do happen to be in direct contact with Ryan Murphy -- and he's not busy trying to remove the guitar Dave Grohl jammed up his ass -- please let him know that every time Gwyneth Paltrow makes an appearance on his show and butchers a song, I realize just a little more that Seven had a happy ending.

Toodles,

Chez : )

Yet another entry in our ongoing series which brings just some of the PR-firm junk e-mail I regularly get to you, the readers.

"Hi Chez,

'If there’s one thing a Sugar Daddy likes more than women, its money,' says Elle, Sugar Baby and Mentor at SugarSugar.com, 'So when he’s face down in his tuna tartar crunching numbers over his lunch break, he won’t be looking up at you.'

SugarSugar.com, the niche dating site where 'romance meets finance,' announces today the 'Top Sugar Dating Hot Spots' in ten cities across the country. Uncovered in each of the website’s top markets, compiled through online polling and responses via the SugarSugar Blog, as well as member feedback, this list will help guide sugar daters to the right place at the right time, helping singles make that first connection with someone who could literally be the girl or guy next door.

And the winners are:

(She goes on to list the 'winners')

For more information about SugarSugar.com, or for interview requests, please feel free to contact me.

Thanks!

And now, my response (and I in fact did write exactly this back to her):

Come on, Kelly -- there's no freaking way you're actually enjoying this job.

Thinking Outside the Inbox

Yet another entry in our ongoing series which brings just some of the PR-firm junk e-mail I regularly get to you, the readers.

"Happy Friday! THIS is the future of Ark Music Factory:

Ark Music Factory’s newest pop star Lexi St.George debuted yesterday morning on Good Morning America. The song is building steadily at YouTube. Coverage is massive all week on Ark and GMA’s web sites—of the segment and the song. iTunes average rating for the song is 4.5. Online comments are overwhelmingly positive. There’s even a bootleg “chipmunk” version of the song. The video, outtakes, exclusive footage and photos of Lexi are also featured on Ark Music Factory’s web site www.arkmusicfactory.com,

While Rebecca Black—an artist discovered, defined, and delivered by Patrice Wilson, founder of ARK Music Factory--became an overnight pop sensation with 'Friday,' Lexi’s going to go far too and she represents a significant evolution of Ark. 'Ark Music Factory is an online music platform that discovers, defines and delivers up and coming talent to the next level,' says veteran music manager and film producer Anita Camarata has come to Ark to work alongside founder Patrice Wilson. She says, 'Ark Music Factory works to provide new artists with the tools to progress in their careers, and we develop artists of our own.'

GMA and Ark Music Factory -- with the help of a great talent and a stellar team -- made a pop star in one week. Who’s next? In few weeks, Ark plans a nationwide online talent search. For more information, fans should make sure to keep visiting www.abcnews.go.com/GMA and www.arkmusicfactory.com and get ready to become the next Ark Pop Star. We welcome your coverage! Happy Friday and Happy 4th of July.

Cheers,

Harry"

And now, my response:

Dear Harry,

This is normally where I'd cleverly pretend to gush over the contents of your press release in the hope that my douchey faux-magnanimity would clue you in to the fact that I couldn't care less what kind of crap you're peddling. I would, really, but to be honest I'm too fucking tired right now to even muster up the energy to be decently sarcastic with you -- especially about something as patently ridiculous as the "Ark Music Factory," which is probably as close to an engine of pure evil as you'll find this far north of hell. If you somehow wind up representing the guy who, in a fit of insane rage or maybe to impress Evan Rachel Wood, winds up taking the entire staff of the Ark Music Factory hostage and who burns the place the the ground, drop me a line. That I can work with. Otherwise, please don't get anywhere near my inbox.

True, my brain is tapioca right now but even in my compromised condition I know a diabolical abomination when I see and hear it. And while I'm sure the wholly owned subsidiary of the Disney Company/Cap Cities/ABC TV known as "Lexi St. George" (and way to give her a head-start in her future porn career with that name, by the way) is a nice enough girl, she should never be forgiven for her role in what's about to be foisted on the American public over the next three weeks. Jesus, at least Rebecca Black rose to fame respectably -- by going from a joke on Twitter to the teen queen of irony to an inexplicable sensation in a split second. It was organic. Lexi can't even make that claim; she's what happens when the mainstream media, like your grandmother friending you on Facebook, begins meddling with the primal forces of viral transmission and social networking and just decides to cut out those pesky middle men and go ahead and make something the next big thing simply by dubbing it so.

Speaking of which, tell the Ark Music Factory and GMA to stop patting themselves on the back. They engineered a pop star in one week with this girl. You know what that makes them? Amateurs. Underachievers. Ark's first unholy creation, the aforementioned Rebecca Black, did it in 72 hours with the help of one tweet from a comic who thought she was the worst thing he'd ever heard. This? This is cheating.

Man, do you write back to your mom in Des Moines and admit that you're doing this for a living or do you at least lie to her and tell her you've got a more respectable job in New York City -- like manning the business end of a restroom glory hole at Port Authority for spare change. Jesus, you poor bastard.

I Hate People Who Aren't British and Still Insist on Signing Off with "Cheers,"

Thinking Outside the Inbox

Another installment in the ongoing series that brings just some of the entertaining PR junk mail that I regularly get to you, the readers.

"Chez,

With the end of the world taking place tomorrow, May 21st, several pressing questions come to mind: Where will I be? Will I be alone? What’s my last meal?

But the most important question of all: What will I be wearing?

The answer: PajamaJeans

Some fashion experts, TV personalities, celebs and journalists have said PajamaJeans represent the end of the world. So why not heed their advice and wear them at the end of the world. Comfort and style are important whether you’re running 40 errands in four minutes or waiting for the Rapture.

With the end getting closer, PajamaJeans have used their immense popularity to expand into huge nationwide retailers like Wal-Mart and (should we survive) will be in every major retail chain come June.

Maybe PajamaJeans are the end given their continually growing popularity and fan base. Check out these recent national and regional TV spots applauding their fashion-friendly comfort:

Kathie Lee & Hoda

KRCA: NBC Sacramento

WCCO-TV: CBS Minnesota

I can provide more info, samples (next day of course) and connect you with the CEO. Look forward to hearing from you!

Best,

Ryan"

And now, my response:

You know what? I got nothin'. This is actually pretty brilliant. Those has-beens over at Snuggie should really take note. Kudos, Ryan.

Thinking Outside the Inbox

Yet another entry in our ongoing series which brings just some of the PR-firm junk e-mail I regularly get to you, the readers.

"Dear Chez:

In response to Spirit Airlines’ implementation of carry on baggage fees, my client, the American Association for Nude Recreation, is weighing in with the following comments...

Traveling with luggage is an ever-increasing inconvenience and expense - even if you don’t check your bag - as airlines are now beginning to charge even for that, as evidenced by Spirit Airline’s $45 carry on fee.

According to the American Association for Nude Recreation's executive director, Erich Schuttauf, 'To avoid added baggage stress as you embark upon a vacation, whose purpose is to de-stress and rejuvenate you, plan a Nakation – a vacation to a nudist resort! All you’ll need for the week (sunscreen, cap, sunglasses, shoes and toiletries) can fit in a small carry on that will fit under the seat, avoiding even carry on bag fees. So avoid the hassles of security screening bag issues, worries over lost belongings because you can’t lock your luggage to protect checked valuables. And the fact that overhead compartments never seem large enough for carry on roller bags. Take a Nakation.'

The American Association of Nude Recreation has over 250 member clubs, resorts, campgrounds and RV parks from which to choose for your Nakation.

Adds Schuttauf, 'If more air travelers take a stand and a Nakation in 2010, it could send a message to the airlines using checked and unchecked baggage fees as a way to charge the vacationing masses more money in this tight economy.'

Thank you for your consideration of this topic, on behalf of the American Association for Nude Recreation.

Best regards,

Mary"

And now, my response:

Nope. I got nothin'.

The latest in our ongoing series which brings just some of the PR firm junk e-mail I regularly get to you, the readers. This one isn't from a PR firm but an actual company. The pitch for its product is, to put it mildly, creative. (And no, this isn't an April Fool's joke.)

"'Obama and Tea Party Heard Loud and Clear With AmpliVox Megaphones'

Barack Obama and The Tea Party were Heard Loud and Clear With AmpliVox Sound Systems' Megaphones.

Northbrook, Illinois (Amplivox Sound Systems) March 29, 2010 -- If there is one thing both sides of the political spectrum can agree on it is that AmpliVox Sound Systems assure reliable communications. On two separate political occasions, Barack Obama's 100th day in office and a recent Tea Party rally, both sides chose an AmpliVox Megaphone to deliver their newsworthy message.

The nation's political parties depend on and trust the reliable quality sound of AmpliVox megaphones at their important events. AmpliVox megaphones are known as durable weather resistant workhorses that get the message across loud and clear with their solid-state electronics, lightweight design and long life battery technology.

AmpliVox Sound Systems CEO Don Roth describes their megaphones as an integral part of their multimedia presentation systems. In addition, AmpliVox has recently launched a 'Speak Up for America' program. With every megaphone purchased AmpliVox will make a $15 donation to the YMCA of the USA to benefit the Y's mission, programs and services nationwide.

AmpliVox Sound Systems products are made in the USA (with only a few exceptions), meet stringent UL standards, and come with an up to 6 year warranty. Our wide selection meets every speaker's sound coverage and style needs. Looking for more information? Contact Amplivox.

Thank you for your time!

Sincerely,

Don Roth
Amplivox CEO"

Well, if you've wondered who's to blame for all the noise in modern politics -- now you know.

Gotta love this pitch, though. It's like if Duracell put together a commercial with Jeff Bridges's voice-over saying, "Only one battery is so trusted that it can be found in both Pat Robertson's pacemaker and Sasha Grey's vibrator."

Hi Chez–

I’m sure you’ve heard the exciting news that Hillary Duff is engaged!! As images will probably begin to surface shortly, we’d love to offer you celeb jewelry and CEO of MyJewelryBox.com, David Mamane, to appraise the ring for you.

Please contact me if you are interested in having him appraise the ring for you, give tips, price quotes, etc.

Have a great weekend!

Best, Lindsay

And now, my response:

Dear Lindsay,

While I appreciate the kind offer -- and you're so right, it is exciting news -- I actually won't be requiring the services of your jewelry expert seeing as how I bought the ring and therefore know exactly how much it cost. Yes, that's right, I'm engaged to Hilary Duff, which means that henceforth she should be referred to in the press as "The Future Ex-Mrs. Pazienza #5" (as opposed to say, Hillary with two Ls, the way lazy PR flacks who can't even be bothered to Google the correct spelling of her name might write). I know it's getting so you need a slide rule to keep track of all my wives, but I hope you can at least respect my tenacity. For the record, Hilary is Lucky #5 -- the one I just know is Miss Right -- because last weekend I got hitched to a Thai hooker in Vegas, but unfortunately young Pakpao was killed in a tragic, entirely accidental fall from the top of the Stratosphere tower three hours after the ceremony. So, hey, gotta get back on the horse, right? Anyhoo, feel free to send a gift our way; Hils and I are registered at Macy's, Target, Hot Topic, Wet Seal and the Hustler Superstore on Sunset. Also, would you happen to know the name of a good divorce attorney who's willing to be kept on permanent retainer?

Cookies,

Hi Chez,

I hope all is well!

I wanted to pass on this celebrity baby sighting to you… Melissa Joan Hart was spotted taking some time off of her new show... to spend some quality time with her two kids, Mason and Braydon. The three cuties stayed bundled up together in Bryant Park, NYC.

Melissa seemed to be taking care and having fun with her little ones with plenty of ease. She has “tweeted” saying she is a huge fan of BornFree baby products and that was easy to tell as she was pouring her older son, Mason chocolate milk in his BornFree Sippy Cup while youngest, Braydon looked very content with his BornFree pacifier.

Let me know if you would like the high-res photos of Melissa with her two kids to post, and I’d be happy to send along. Thanks, and I look forward to hearing from you!

Best,

Danielle

And now, my response:

Dear Danielle,

Yes, I'd love some high-res photos of Melissa Joan Hart. I spent much of the early 90s masturbating to Clarissa Explains it All so this will be like a dream come true. I plan to photoshop my head onto the body of young Mason. Or maybe Braydon. Or both.

Toodles,

Chez

Hi Chez,

Curious if Justin Bieber is serious about working with Taylor Swift? Want to find out the inside scoop on what he and Miley Cyrus will present at the 2010 Grammys? I thought you and your readers would be interested in this VIP meet&greet with teen sensation Justin Bieber, which is up for auction at charitybuzz.com to raise funds for Let Em Play – a charity which helps youth participate in sports, entertainment, and educational programs who otherwise would not be able to afford to.

For more information or images, please contact me at xxxxx@xxxxxxxxxxx.com

Best,

Matt

And now, my response:

Dear Matt,

Sounds good. I'm planning to kill myself next Thursday, so really anytime before that will work. Just e-mail all the necessary info to jesusdoyouevenreadthesitesyouresendingthisshitto@gmail.com and I'll get right on it. Oh, and it's than not then; as in "no name is more recognized in the pop music and television shows of the teen crowd than Miley Cyrus," or maybe "I'd rather be colonoscoped with the front of a Los Angeles class nuclear submarine than have to listen to Mylie Cyrus or Justin Bieber."

Glad I could help.

The latest in our ongoing series which brings just some of the PR-firm junk e-mail I regularly get to you, the readers.

"Hey Chez,

Wanted to give you the 411 involving the latest celebrity showdown that will play out on the dance floor…

So, What's the Scoop?

Ms. Sasha Fierce better look out because Barbie has hired JaQuel Knight (the choreographer from the 'Single Ladies' video and MTV VMA Nominee) to create the newest dance craze – 'The Barbie' for her FIRST MUSIC VIDEO... featuring a remake of the classic 'Barbie Girl' song...

JaQuel has worked with three of the biggest 'B’s' in show business today... Beyonce, Brit and now Barbie…and thought this could be something fun to share with your readers... especially with the VMA’s just around the corner.

I attached a press release that has all the juicy details and included the You Tube link to the music video.

Have fun doing 'The Barbie'

Thanks,

Sarah"

And now, my response.

Dear Sarah,

Fuck yeah! Bring it on, honky tonk, 'cause you just made my day! I was sitting here not a moment ago, in my wheelchair next to the nurses' station, thinking to myself, "Gosh, the VMAs are coming up. What ever shall I do?" My readers -- who as you know are made up of a giant wire-mesh cage filled with rhesus monkeys -- will be demanding that I bring them "the 411" on every little thing the average MTV viewer might care about. I was thinking about getting Tila Tequila to go down on me in one of the bathrooms at Nikki Beach Club and then relaying in graphic detail my subsequent battle with syphilis, but unfortunately the doctors won't even let me have visitors anymore, much less allow me out for a "field trip" -- not after the incident with the school bus.

I thought I was out of luck. And then you come along like an angel with the Barbie Dance (which as you mention is sure to become a "craze" simply because, well, your PR firm is already declaring to the slavish media that it is one). I can't thank you enough for this, Sarah; especially for helping to ensure that by this time next month, the, ahem, "classic" Barbie Girl song will have spread like a virus across America and will be blasting from every car stereo, iPod, television and movie trailer so that it's inescapable.

And I'll once again have to take a drill to my head to get the fucking sound of it out of my brain. Which is what landed me in this particular ward back in the mid-90s to begin with.

Thanks again -- and for God's sake make the screaming stop!

Toodles,

Chez : )

PS: Yay! Sasha Fierce!

PPS: This is all for a doll? Really?

(Update: Fine. You guys win. The video can be found here and the "JaQuel" Barbie Dance tutorial can be found here. I promise you that each of them will make your ears and eyes bleed and your brain run out through your nose. Now please stop sending me e-mails saying "PLAY THE VIDEO! PLAY THE VIDEO!" Jesus Christ, I was joking about the whole rhesus monkeys thing but maybe I wasn't all that far off.)

My Response:

Dearest Katie,

How did you know it was my birthday a few weeks ago?!?! As I'm sure you're aware, I and my readers LOVED the bestselling book He's Just Not That Into You, especially after Oprah drooled all over a copy of it on her show. We also in no way think that the book's author, ex-stand up comedian and lone heterosexual male Sex and the City writer Greg Behrendt, is in any way the world's biggest douche. But the icing on the cake? PRODUCT PLACEMENT! I can't tell you the kind of joy I and my readers get trying to pick out every product forcibly stuffed into a modern blockbuster until the result is one giant, distracting advertisement for an assortment of crap that hits you over the head like a can of Dinty Moore Beef Stew™. So I guess the only thing left to say, Katie, is THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! (By the way, you misspelled "Connelly.")

Toodles,

Chez

Now, just for the hell of it, a repost of a piece that ran way back in September of 2006 that deals with consumerism, He's Just Not That Into You, and its Ultimate Douche author, Greg Behrendt.

"Return of the Attack of the Attack of the Creepy Surrealism"

Last week I brought up a phenomenon which just about everyone has become aware of at one point or another, and which Washington Post columnist Joel Achenbach termed "Creeping Surrealism." (Sign O' the Times/9.12.06) It's the strange and overwhelming feeling that nothing is real anymore -- that information manipulation has become so virtuoso as to render the artificial completely indistinguishable from the genuine.

An inevitable by-product of this is that even if Americans can tell the real from the fake, they no longer think the distinction matters and therefore don't even bother to try to anymore.

One of my favorite examples he cites is the curious case of Pepperidge Farms "Homestyle" Cookies, which are literally designed to look as if they've been lovingly spooned onto a cookie sheet one by one, no doubt by Grandma's frail, caring hand -- the engineered imperfections doubtless proof of this fact. Achenbach posits that we all fully understand the reality -- that the Pepperidge Farms company has created a mold which cranks out cookies meant to look as if they weren't created by a mold -- but choose to ignore it.

We just accept the fact that we're being royally bullshitted.

A second example he offers is the strange and somewhat unnerving predilection many in this country have toward trusting the people on television, simply because they're on television. Achenbach reminds us that long before reality TV created a vast expanse of gray area between honesty and nonsense, a significant portion of the American population saw nothing unusual in writing letters to Robert Young -- TV's Marcus Welby M.D. -- requesting medical advice. Only the most delusional among them actually believed that Young was, in fact, the wise and kindly doctor he portrayed on TV; the rest simply assumed that anyone who played the part so well had to be familiar with the subject -- which is frightening in and of itself, particularly when that subject is medicine.

I've seen dozens of examples of this phenomenon throughout my career: for every one television news anchor who truly understood the material that was going into his or her head and subsequently coming out of his or her mouth -- or took part in the assembly of that material for that matter -- there were five who didn't have a goddamned clue what was going on in the world, or in their own newsroom, that wasn't placed in their teleprompter by a 22-year-old, six-dollar-an-hour writer. Yet, when the queries and suggestions from the audience came, they came addressed to the face on the screen rather than the people who were actually responsible for the gathering and dissemination of the information in question.

No matter how cynical we believe we've become throughout the years, to this day millions of us still trust the talking head on the mysterious glowing box in the living room.

The difference these days however, is that the recipients of all of that misplaced trust have finally learned to fully exploit and capitalize on the public's lack of discrimination when it comes to on-screen persona versus off-screen reality -- and they're now doing it in profoundly inventive ways. To put it another way, they're taking the advice that Guns N' Roses offered fifteen years ago: Use Your Illusion.

Enter Greg Behrendt.

For much of the early 90s, Behrendt made the rounds as a somewhat substandard comic -- basing a good portion of his stand-up material on the supposed inherent irony in being a "Rock n' Roll Guy" (spiked hair, earrings, tattoos, affinity for wallet-chains with low-slung jeans), while at the same time being a "Metrosexual-type Guy" (hair wax, sterling silver earrings, skin cleanser, affinity for wallet-chains with low-slung Diesel jeans). Despite the fact that in reality these two extremes are nothing more than opposite ends of the same spectrum of vacuity, Behrendt's routine eventually caught the eye of HBO, which put him on television -- and that's where things really took off; he landed a somewhat surprising new gig, which simultaneously made him the poster-child for Creeping Surrealism.

Behrendt was hired as a "consultant" on Sex & The City; he was brought on board to correct the writing staff of women and gay men whenever they were about to make one of the show's straight male characters do something that a real straight man would never do -- such as get anywhere near a woman who essentially looks like the four-legged half of a Tijuana donkey show. The only real requirements in the job description were that Behrendt be heterosexual and be at least as funny as the writers themselves, which judging by their output was about as funny as prison rape.

But here's the thing, Behrendt's stint on Sex & The City was by no means the end of his career -- far from it in fact; what he did next was parlay the "experience" he gained on the show into a best-selling book on -- in Creepily Surreal fashion -- relationships.

Perhaps you've heard of it -- it was called He's Just Not That Into You.

To recap: A relatively unfunny stand-up comedian took a gig on a show about women who sleep with the Manhattan phone book but can't make any of their relationships work, and used it to write a self-help book for the kind of vapid women who watch the show regularly and can't make any of their relationships work.

Now comes the latest twist: Behrendt has used the success of that book and his follow-up, the Oprah-ready monikered It's Called a Break-Up Because it's Broken, to land himself his own talk show, which debuts this week. What does the show focus on? If you guessed relationships, you win yourself some hair wax. In the commercial for the syndicated show, which debuts this week on various channels around the country, Behrendt walks purposefully while saying -- without so much as a hint of a knowing smile or a tip of the hat to irony -- that he's going to help people get more out of their "relationships -- all kinds of relationships."

And needless to say, no one is more qualified to take on this seemingly gargantuan task than a guy who consulted for a show about casual sex and who once briefly dated Janeane Garofalo before she had her sense of humor surgically removed and began a new career as a pissed-off quasi-lesbian.

The Behrendt Love Gravy Train isn't the only one to have departed from the Sex & The City station. Awhile back, Kim Cattrall either became the toast of the method-acting community by forgetting completely where her character ended and where she began, or simply hoped to exploit the public's alleged fascination with her on-screen reputation by writing two books on -- can you see it coming? (pun completely intended) -- female sexuality. Her advertising campaign may as well have been a new twist on a well-known catchphrase: "I'm not a whore, but I play one on TV." Once again the idea seemed to be that no one is in a better position to lecture the American public on a given subject than someone who's portrayed an expert on that subject on television.

There's a part of me that would love to chalk all of this narcissistic presumptuousness up to Hollywood in general and its well-worn cadre of Yes Men; it's probably the only place in the world where a rambling, coke-fueled idea tossed out at four in the morning is met not with a healthy level of friendly skepticism, but rather with a chorus of giddy approval and six business cards.

Regardless of who's behind the selling of this crap though, one thing is for certain -- we're still happily buying it.

And that's as Creepily Surreal as it gets.

Thinking Outside the Inbox

The e-mail of the week, compliments of one of New York City's larger PR firms:

We hope you will note this item and please let me know if you have any questions… thanks so much!

Best,

Dear Karen,

YOU! ARE! SANTA CLAUS!

You must be, because you just made this little boy's Christmas wish come true! As you know from having read my site even a couple of times, I LOVE the Jonas Brothers. They just make my heart go pitter-patter and make my wee-wee get all tingly. I'd do anything for a signed guitar for my favorite rock gods (and I do mean anything, if you get my drift). That executive director guy? If he's so much as been in the same room with Nick, Harvey and, uh, Fred Jonas, I'll not only talk to him, I'll let him take me unnaturally. So, yeah! Let's do this!

Toodles,

Chez : )

Thinking Outside the Inbox

The e-mail of the week, compliments of one of New York City's larger media PR firms:

Chez,

Are the Olympics to blame for The Hills' recent dip in ratings?

When season 3 of the MTV hit show The Hills premiered last season it was up 40% from season 2's debut. But, according to Mediaweek, there was no such growth for the season 4 premiere that aired on Monday night.

Mediaweek reports The Hills’ debut ratings were down 9% in its key 12-to-34 demographic (2.1 million) and down 5% among total viewers (3.5 million) when compared to its one-hour season 3 debut.

Will the coming weeks without the Olympics provide a better test or are viewers over LC, Speidi and the rest of the crew?

XXXXXX’s TV specialist XXXX XXXXXX, (a.k.a. “Mr. TV”) is available to weigh-in on this topic and discuss the popularity, ratings and future of this reality-show phenom.
