I've never posted a static YouTube music clip before, but then again I've also never posted a whole series of music from one particular band before so I guess I'm breaking new ground all over the place.
This will be the final song of my little homage to Rush. It would have to be something I truly, truly love for me put up a video that's nothing more than a single shot used as wallpaper for an album track -- and, in fact, it is.
The first time I heard Ghost of a Chance, from Rush's 1991 album Roll the Bones, I was caught off guard by the fact that the band had finally released what could only be called a "love song." After so many years spent wading neck-deep in grand themes and sometimes pompous self-indulgence -- yes, the criticism the band has endured is at least partially fair -- to hear Lee, Lifeson and Peart drop much of their stylistic pretense and just do a straightforward song about the belief that two people can make love work, in spite of everything standing in their way, was surprisingly moving.
I honestly think that this song has the best, most inspired and, yes, most quietly powerful chorus of anything Rush has ever done.
Here's Ghost of a Chance.
We now return you to your normal Listening Posts. New music tomorrow.
