After more than 30 years, Jaws remains one of my all-time favorite movies.
It's just a classic in every sense of the word, a near-flawless display of exhilarating storytelling highlighted by performances that are absolutely believable; you care about the fates of the characters because there isn't a second that you aren't wholly invested in each of them.
Particularly, Chief Martin Brody -- the all-too-human everyman, the audience's surrogate -- played to perfection by Roy Scheider.
Yesterday, Scheider died at the age of 75.
I can say without fear of contradiction that he'll be sorely missed.
He could play passionate and bombastic, he could play modest and vulnerable.
He could do anything -- he was the chief of police.
