Listening Post

The simplest music videos are sometimes the best. Here's a great amateur clip shot in Central Park for what's probably the best song on the most recent Snow Patrol album (which is saying something, since overall the record is fantastic).

This is Lifeboats.

Quote of the Week (Early Contender)

"I don't think she quit."

-- John McCain referring to Sarah Palin and either A) proving that he's in the late stages of Alzheimers, or B) trying to "use the force"

An awesome new song from Canadian band Mobile and a cool-as-hell video to go with it.

Here's The Killer.

Tune In, Turn On

It's that time again -- time for another edition of my favorite thing on YouTube at the moment: Auto-Tune the News, Volume 5.

(By the way, although Sarah Fullen goes for the laugh in these bits -- she's one-third of the team that puts them together -- she's actually a damn talented soul singer. She fronts a band out of Brooklyn called Sarah and the Stanleys and her voice just makes my heart ache in the best possible way and my knees go all weak. Listen for yourself here.)

Update: As it turns out, I'm really behind the curve. Here's the very latest Auto-Tune the News clip for the past couple of weeks.

The Insider

As much as it pains me to ruin your weekend -- and believe me, this just might -- take a half-hour and watch the following Bill Moyers interview with Wendell Potter, former head of corporate communications for Cigna Health Care.

Potter comes clean about just a few of the Machiavellian tactics Cigna and other private insurers have used throughout the past decade to crush any kind of health care reform that might cut into their bottom line. Specifically, he talks about the Nataline Sarkisyan case in California a few years back, in which Cigna denied a transplant that would've saved a young girl, as well as his company's PR strategy to discredit Michael Moore's Sicko (both of which I've written about in a previous piece).

Bottom line: What you hear come out of this man's mouth will infuriate you -- and it should. It should because Cigna and its fellow robber barons in the private health care racket are doing it again -- standing in the way of health care reform that could provide an inexpensive, public insurance option for you and your family.

This is your life we're talking about. Don't you dare let these bastards get away with it.
