Wealth Endowed

A wise man told me years ago, regarding television news, "You'll never get rich in this business."

For the most part, that statement holds true -- unless of course you're network talent or a guy like Jeff Zucker, who it can easily be argued was never in TV news anyway and was always a low-level (and now very high-level) pimp.

Well, nobody can say that Jacki Wells Cisneros became a multi-millionaire by being a freelance desk editor at KNBC; she just happened to be doing that when she and her husband suddenly found out that they're worth a goddamned fortune.

In case you haven't seen it on television for yourself yet, Jacki and hubby Gilbert hit the Mega-Millions jackpot in California last night -- which means they're about to get a windfall of $266-million. I've worked with Jacki before -- during my time out in L.A. -- and I can tell you that she's a really terrific person, so I just couldn't be happier for her. Always nice to see somebody who toils away in the often thankless world of local news -- especially as a freelancer -- have a little good luck come their way.

Or, in Jacki's case, a whole hell of a lot of good luck.

Congrats, guys!

Now go answer the phone. That's L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa calling to ask how "The Jacki and Gilbert Cisneros Memorial City Hall" sounds to you.
