Listening Post

I've done it since I was a teenager: Put in earphones -- or gotten into my car and cranked the stereo -- and disappeared into my own little world, letting the music transform everything around me and provide the soundtrack to a movie only I know exists.

This was one of the best things about living in New York. Every day, everything you do at any time, feels like it was made to be set to music -- and the music you choose can change not just your own mood but the way the city, your surroundings, actually look to you.

About halfway through my last tour in Gotham, I began listening to a lot of BT's This Binary Universe album in my iPod as I navigated the ins and outs -- the dark corners and wide open spaces; the streets, alleys, subways, and cabs -- of the city. The nearly tactile atmosphere that this music evoked as it gently drowned the usual chaos of New York life was nothing short of magical. It was like creating very personal art -- turning life into art.

From that album, here's the title track -- This Binary Universe.

And as a bonus, BT's excellent new single, Every Other Way.
