To Live and Die in the USA

As I've mentioned ad nauseam for the past few years, there's nothing the media love more than scaring the hell out of you -- and needless to say, Sarah Palin's ridiculous "Obama death panels" charge from late last week was tailor-made to be endlessly debated and perpetuated by every news outlet in America. The fact that it was utter nonsense doesn't matter, nor does the fact that it was offered up by a woman with a proven track record of saying the kind of crap that makes you wonder if Down Syndrome is, in fact, hereditary.

Here's the ironic thing about Palin's claim, though: There are, to a large extent, already "death panels" working behind the scenes in the U.S. health care system. The only difference of course is that they happen to subscribe to the good, old-fashioned American belief that unfettered greed -- and not some arm of the government -- should dictate who lives and who dies.
