Just a quick follow-up:
Yesterday I linked to an article in the latest issue of Newsweek which takes on Oprah's relentless glorification of celebrity pseudo-science. On its own, the piece is surprisingly bold in its questioning of some of the utter nonsense spewed by Oprah and the guests she regularly touts as having the cure for whatever ails you (a daily bombardment of hormones staves off menopause, vaccinating your kids gives them autism, thyroid issues are caused by your unwillingness to express yourself, "The Secret", etc.). But what's even more surprising is that the article is the magazine's cover story this week.
On the surface, it wouldn't seem like a big deal that a magazine other than Oprah's own would plaster her goofy face on the cover, considering her popularity with women who spend a good portion of their time waiting in line at the grocery store. But when you consider Oprah's almost untouchable status as a cultural icon in this country, it really does take balls of steel to attack her -- even legitimately -- in such a pronounced way (by putting her goofy face on the cover and emblazoning the words "CRAZY TALK" above it). I never worry about any of the criticisms I lay at Oprah's swollen feet or any of the rude cracks I make about her (like, say, that last one) because I'm a nobody and of no concern to someone as powerful as Oprah. However, Newsweek is a different story; Oprah's so used to having her prodigious ass kissed by every mainstream media outlet in America that I guarantee you this apostasy is not going to go unanswered. It's going to cause a stir. Maybe even a big one.
Because don't make Oprah angry. You wouldn't like her when she's angry.
Bottom line: Go Newsweek.
