Listening Post



It's underappreciated. It's landmark. It's just spectacular.

Basehead's 1992 hip-hop gem Play with Toys is one of those records that, if you've actually heard it, probably ranks close to the top of your list of all-time favorites. Michael Ivey's oddball lyrics involving everything from world affairs, to heavy drinking, to the perils of breaking up with your girlfriend while "The Quiet Storm" is playing on the radio -- all delivered through a droning mellow-tone that sounds a little like Q-Tip gargling bong water -- is mesmerizing from start to finish.
