Walking Wounded

When we got to the emergency room, Inara was bleeding badly, screaming loudly and obviously in serious pain. They wrapped up her head and then forced us to wait while they prepped a room for her. (American health care system -- great success!) That took a hell of a lot longer than I would've liked, but the good news was that after quite a while of her clinging to me as I rocked her gently, Inara started feeling a little better and asked to be put down so she could wander. I snapped this picture during that time.
I really hope she continues to take even the most difficult ordeals in this kind of stride as she makes her way through life.
Quote of the Day

"The most powerful statement by the organizers of the planned Sept. 11th bonfire would be to call it off in the name and love of Jesus Christ."
-- Leith Anderson, president of the National Association of Evangelicals, on the plan by a Florida church to burn copies of the Koran this coming September 11th as a statement against the supposed evil of Islam
No, the most powerful statement would be to call this obscenely ridiculous spectacle off in the name of logic and reason. Wouldn't that be nice for a change?
Oh, and I rest my case that Florida truly is the engorged penis of the United States.

The Unkindest Cut

Yesterday started off wonderfully, with Inara returning and Jayne and I taking her to get her first haircut -- which she responded to with her usual curious bemusement.
Unfortunately, the day got much worse from there. About an hour after coming home with me, Inara bounded up onto the bed next to me and faceplanted into the edge of a marble windowsill. The result was, well, horrific -- blood everywhere, followed by a terrified drive at 80-miles-an-hour or so to the hospital right up the street. Six stitches in the skull-deep gash in her forehead later, she was feeling much better. Her father, not so much. The doctors say the scar will likely vanish over time, which makes me think that in some ways Inara is the lucky one, as eventually she won't remember a thing.
I, on the other hand, will never forget holding my severely bleeding little girl in my arms.
The bottom line is that over the next 24 to 48 hours, I'm going to be completely out of the loop. I'm actually working on an extended piece for here and HuffPost that I hope to finish up soon, but I doubt that'll be for at least another couple of days.
Sorry, gang.
