Listening Post

Dear God, yes.

Here it is, folks: brand new Nine Inch Nails.

I have to admit I was wary given the turn Trent's music has taken over the past few years. Not that I don't like it; I like it very much. It's just that it's been very experimental, free-form and obviously made to be applied to movie soundtracks. I wondered if he could regain the kind of focus that would create not just great music but great Nine Inch Nails music.

And he has.

This sounds like the old material I love so much. This sounds brand new. It's just fucking great.

Here's Came Back Haunted.

Happy Monday, gang.

From their upcoming full-length album, Welcome Oblivion, here's the new single from the Trent Reznor project How To Destroy Angels.

So I wake up to good news to start the week. Nine Inch Nails are once again being cobbled together and will begin touring through this year and next. The new lineup is interesting, including guitar legend Adrian Belew and original Jane's Addiction bassist Eric Avery.

Here's Every Day Is Exactly the Same.

Directed by John Hillcoat, the new video from Trent Reznor's side project with his wife, How To Destroy Angels, is appropriately dark and spare -- and it actually features a beach that looks quite a bit like the one from The Road.

The music, though, perfectly fits Hillcoat's aesthetic.

Here's Ice Age.

Listening Post: Tattoo You Edition

A little something extra for you this morning, since I'm slammed with work. When it comes to the soundtrack to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, a lot of the focus has been on Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross and Karen O's cover of Zeppelin's Immigrant Song. As much as I love that track -- and God do I -- there's a dark horse cover on the record that I've found myself listening to over and over again since first hearing it.

It's the album's closing song: Trent and Atticus's "band" How To Destroy Angels, with Trent's wife on vocals, doing Bryan Ferry's gorgeous Is Your Love Strong Enough -- itself from the soundtrack to the 1985 Ridley Scott film Legend.

It was a fantastic song to begin with and I really like what they've done with it.

After grabbing pretty much everybody by the throat in the very first teaser for the upcoming David Fincher film, it's finally here in its full form -- if you can call a song that clocks in at under three minutes "full."

From the soundtrack to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, it's Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross and Karen O covering Led Zeppelin's Immigrant Song.

Tattoo You

Let's see: a kick-ass book, David Fincher directing, Trent Reznor and Karen O covering The Immigrant Song, and a topless Rooney Mara.

Behold the leaked red-band trailer for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

Watch it now before it gets pulled down.

Oh -- and HO-LY SHIT.

Quote of the Week

"You know that feeling you get when somebody embarrasses themselves so badly YOU feel uncomfortable? Heard Chris Cornell’s record? Jesus."
