Listening Post

With production by Rick Rubin and an opening that pays direct homage to Paul Revere, the first single from Eminem's follow-up to the landmark Marshall Mathers LP comes out of the gate like a smack across the face.

This is the definition of Beastie Boys-style old school -- and it's one of the balls-out best songs of the year.

Here's Berzerk.

Listening Post

I posted this as an advance audio file a couple of months ago, but now behold the kick-ass 11 minute video extravaganza that the Beastie Boys put together with Santigold for Don't Play No Game That I Can't Win.

Listening Post

The Beastie Boys stopped being boys a very long time ago; in fact it's kind of shocking to think that License To Ill was the adopted soundtrack of my senior high school class of 1987. What's even more shocking, though, is that almost 25 years later, they're still one of hip-hop's most powerful and vital acts.

Here's an unbelievably cool track from their upcoming album, The Hot Sauce Committee Part Two -- and this one features New York City hipster goddess Santigold.

This is Don't Play No Game That I Can't Win.

(Update: After listening to this several times, I gotta say -- holy crap do I love this freaking song.)

Picture of the Week (Honorary Mention)

As Oliver Willis beautifully put it, these things are a lot funnier once you stop pretending that Fox News is an actual news network.

Apparently while supposedly running down all the nuclear reactors in Japan, Neil Cavuto popped up the above map. One name stands out: Shibuyaeggman. Turns out there is no reactor called that and no specific city or town called that either. There is, however, an "Eggman" nightclub in the Shibuya section of Tokyo.

So a Japanese nuclear reactor is located right below the "@ Super Suits Store." And Jonny Hi-Fi played it back in '06.

Here now, the Beastie Boys doing Eggman. Because as you know, suckers they come a dime a dozen.

This is a damn cool mash-up of two really great songs.

It's Groove Armada's Suntoucher vs. the Beastie Boys' Right Right Now Now.

Listening Post

As long as my little experiment has existed, you'd think by now that I would've popped a Beastie Boys video or two up under the "Listening Post" banner. As it turns out, though, I haven't.

Time to rectify that.

It seems like such an obvious thing to say -- that the Beasties rule in every possible way -- and yet they've been a staple of both hip-hop and alternative music for so many years that it's, ironically, sometimes easy to forget just how brilliant, groundbreaking and flat-out mind-blowing they've been and still are.

Here now, three classics from Mike D, Ad Rock and MCA:

First up, anyone unwilling to admit that Paul's Boutique was years ahead of its time doesn't deserve your friendship. From that album, here's Shake Your Rump.

Next, the single greatest video ever made: Sabotage.

Finally, two words: Star Trek. This is Ch-Check It Out.
