Listening Post: El Dia de los Muertos Edition

Halloween's great and all, but the two days that follow actually mark one of my favorite times of the year. Christians call it "All Saints Day" or "All Souls Day," but in Mexico -- or in Los Angeles, where I spent several years of my life -- it's known as "El Dia de los Muertos," or "The Day of the Dead." I've mentioned this before, but it's worth repeating: You don't have to be religious to appreciate religious symbolism or iconography -- and you don't have to subscribe to the beliefs behind it to be drawn to the eerie beauty of the Day of the Dead celebration.

Unfortunately, the video for this song was removed during the great Warner Bros. YouTube Cleansing of 2009, which happened back in February, and that's an unforgivable shame since it's something everyone should have access to. Still, this live in-studio version remains -- and the song itself retains the playful surrealism that makes it one of the best singles of the 90s (although criminally overlooked as such).

Here's Los Lobos doing Kiko and the Lavender Moon.
