If there's anything I've proven to regular readers by now, it's that I'm a slave to bittersweet nostalgia; I have been since I was a kid -- which makes no sense, I know, but you're talking about somebody who was overwhelmingly moved by T.S. Eliot's regret-soaked Prufrock at the mere age of 16. With that in mind, I kind of stumbled across something on YouTube this morning that I haven't seen in years -- one of my all-time favorite movies, in particular a scene from that film that just floored me when I was a kid and which continues to to this day. My early embrace of it once again will very likely tell you quite a bit about me -- certainly about the kind of adult I was destined to eventually grow into (much to my ultimate misfortune).
The movie is the 1985 gem Heaven Help Us. The scene is Andrew McCarthy and Mary Stuart Masterson's kiss under the boardwalk -- as Otis Redding's I've Been Loving You Too Long crescendos. It's one of the sweetest, most desperate and most passionate scenes I've seen in any movie. Ever.
The scene begins unfolding at about the 4:50 mark.
